Mr. Speaker,
Today, May 23rd, marks the 99th anniversary of the arrival of the Komagata Maru into Vancouver’s Burrard Inlet.
Mr. Speaker, I speak today about Bill C-489, an act to amend the Criminal Code and the Corrections and Conditional Release Act (restrictions on offenders). It is a privilege to speak on behalf of my constituents of Surrey North about this important bill. As my hon. colleague, the member for Gatineau, has pointed out in a previous speech, it is rare that we as MPs have the opportunity to discuss something that has a tangible outcome for our constituents.
Mr. Speaker, it is an honour to speak on behalf of my constituents in Surrey North.
I want to start by talking about what the Minister of National Defence pointed out in his speech. He pointed out that this bill is long overdue and should have been addressed before the Conservatives became government. That is due to the slow pace of the government in addressing the criminal justice system and the military. It is the government that has been dragging its feet over a number of years.
Federal Leader of the Official Opposition and NDP leader Thomas Mulcair attended Surrey’s annual Vaisakhi Parade and was welcomed and accompanied by NDP Members of Parliament Jasbir Sandhu, Don Davies, and Jinny Sims. Joining the MPs in the parade was BC NDP Leader Adrian Dix and BC NDP MLA candidates from the area.
Mr. Speaker, it is an honour to speak on behalf of my constituents from Surrey North. I am speaking today about Bill S-7, the proposal to reintroduce anti-terrorism measures, which were previously sunsetted in the Anti-terrorism Act.
